2021 was greatly celebrated by East London’s Bengali community, as it was the 100th birthday anniversary of Bangladesh’s founder, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, as well as the Golden Jubilee celebration of Bangladesh’s independence.
To coincide with the celebrations, Swadhinata Trust published a commemorative album, titled Bangladesh 50, featuring rare black and white historical photographs taken in 1971 by photographer Abul Lais Shyamal.
These pictures depict a story of people uprising against injustice and military rule and are an inspiration to all movements against tyranny and dictators.
All Londoners will find these images both moving and relevant to their daily struggles.
